1 Poor Man's Lab

Putting together a poor man's lab with older equipment, open source, and evaluation software to demonstrate some tasks related to Ubuntu, OpenSUSE, RedHat, VMware, Storage, etc...

Components so far:
2 Older Dell servers 32 bit with ESX 3i update 4
2 Newer Dell servers 64 bit with ESXi 4.1 
A JBOD with about 1TB of 10K SCSI disks attached to 1 of the ESX hosts
A newer 64 bit workstation/laptop acting as the Windows 7 management station
An Ubuntu box serving up an NFS datastore to one of the ESX 3i hosts
HP LeftHand Networks VSA evaluation
Celerra Sim (Uber)
Netapp Sim

Remote Access to Lab provided by OpenVPN Virtual Machine running on one of the ESX hosts

Could also run lab on a laptop or workstation with VMware Workstation and CPU supporting Intel-VT or AMD-V (check BIOS to ensure available and enabled)
Mimimum configuration for ESX on Workstation:
  • Linux > RHEL 4 64bit for VM type
  • 1vCPU
  • 2G RAM
  • Disable 3D Graphics
  • SCSI disk
  • Remove floppy, usb, and enable intel-vt or amd-v
The vmx file must also be configured with:
    monitor_control.restrict_backdoor="true"
